Home Recording

Most new upcoming hip-hop artists record at home.  This may be caused by either a low budget or they just rather record at home where they are comfortable.  If you are recording at home due to a low budget, then you most likely don't have high end gear and/or software.

MICROPHONE SELECTION:

A good starting microphone for those on a budget is the Samson C01U USB-Condenser Mic.  You just plug and you are ready to record!  For those who could afford to spend a bit more on a microphone, the Rhode NT1-A is one of the best microphones for home studios, even for recording studios!  If you decide to go with a different microphone, make sure you do your research.  For vocals, specially rap vocals, you want a condenser microphone.

SOFTWARE SELECTION/TUTORIAL:

Software selection is very important.  Not only do you have to make sure that the software could record, you also have to make sure it is made for recording music.  For example, you don't want to be recording you music on windows recorder.  For those who are on a budget and are just starting out with music and don't know much about the process, Cool Edit Pro 2 is a great starter software.  It is easy to learn and has everything you need to make a great song with good quality.  Here is a tutorial on how to get great quality with Cool Edit Pro:

Next week, we will talk about vocal processing as well as mixing and mastering of a song.
